# How to Write Prompts for AI Product Photography

With one good product photo and a clear prompt, Glif can produce studio shots, lifestyle scenes, flat lays and ad-ready hero images without a photoshoot. This guide gives you a formula for product photography prompts, the vocabulary photographers use, and examples you can adapt.

## Start with a good source photo

The AI can only be as accurate as the photo you give it.

* **Plain background.** A clean shot on white or a neutral color works best.
* **Even light, in focus.** No harsh shadows or blur.
* **Label readable.** If text on the product matters, make sure it's sharp.
* **More than one angle, if you have them.** Front, side and back help Glif keep the product accurate from new viewpoints.
* **The real product.** Use the actual product photo rather than a mockup or rendering, so details stay true.

## The prompt formula

Build your prompt from these parts. You don't need all of them, but each one you add removes guesswork.

| Part | What to say | Example |
| :- | :- | :- |
| **Product** | What it is, and what must not change | "This serum bottle; keep the label and cap exactly as in the photo" |
| **Shot type** | The kind of photo | "Lifestyle shot" / "flat lay" / "white-background e-commerce shot" |
| **Setting and surface** | Where the product sits | "On a marble bathroom counter beside a folded linen towel" |
| **Lighting** | Light quality and direction | "Soft morning window light from the left" |
| **Camera** | Angle, distance, focus | "Eye level, close-up, shallow depth of field" |
| **Composition** | Placement and space | "Product on the right third, empty space on the left for text" |
| **Mood and palette** | Feel and colors | "Calm, clean, warm neutrals with a hint of green" |
| **Format** | Aspect ratio and use | "4:5 for Instagram feed" |
| **Props and people** | What else is in frame | "A hand reaching for the bottle, no face visible" |

**Put together:**

> "Lifestyle shot of this serum bottle on a marble bathroom counter beside a folded linen towel and a sprig of eucalyptus. Soft morning window light from the left. Eye level, close-up, shallow depth of field. Product on the right third with empty space on the left for text. Calm, clean, warm neutrals. 4:5. Keep the label and cap exactly as in the photo."

## Shot types and when to use them

| Shot type | Best for | Prompt starter |
| :- | :- | :- |
| **White background** | Marketplaces, product pages | "Clean e-commerce shot on a pure white background, soft even light, subtle shadow beneath, 1:1" |
| **Transparent background** | Cutouts for designers and layouts | "Product cutout on a transparent background" |
| **Studio hero** | Homepage, launch ads | "Dramatic studio hero shot, dark backdrop, single spotlight, reflection on a glossy surface" |
| **Lifestyle** | Social ads, brand storytelling | "The product in use at \[setting], natural light, candid feel" |
| **Flat lay** | Social, bundles, kits | "Top-down flat lay on \[surface] with \[props], evenly spaced, soft shadows" |
| **In hand / in use** | Showing scale and use | "A hand holding the product, close-up, background softly blurred" |
| **Detail / macro** | Texture, materials, quality | "Macro close-up of the \[texture/material], very shallow depth of field" |
| **Multi-angle** | Product pages, lookbooks | "Front, three-quarter, side and back views, same lighting and background" |

## Vocabulary that helps

**Lighting:** soft window light, golden hour, overcast daylight, studio softbox, hard light with crisp shadows, backlit, rim light, single spotlight, high key (bright, minimal shadows), low key (dark, moody).

**Camera:** eye level, top-down, low angle, three-quarter view, close-up, wide shot, shallow depth of field (blurred background), macro, wide-angle, telephoto compression.

**Surfaces and settings:** marble, travertine, brushed concrete, linen, raw wood, terrazzo, seamless paper backdrop, kitchen counter, bathroom shelf, café table, picnic blanket, gym bench.

**Mood:** minimal, editorial, warm and inviting, fresh and bright, luxurious, playful, rugged, clinical and clean.

## Example prompts

**Marketplace listing**

> "White-background e-commerce shot of this sneaker, three-quarter view facing left, soft even light, subtle shadow beneath, product fills 85% of the frame, 1:1. Keep the logo and stitching exactly as in the photo."

**Paid social**

> "Lifestyle shot of this cold brew can on a café table by a sunny window, condensation on the can, a croissant out of focus in the background. Golden hour light from behind. Close-up, shallow depth of field. 4:5. Leave the top third clear for a headline."

**Seasonal variation**

> "Using the approved shot, make three seasonal versions: autumn (warm oak table, fallen leaves), winter (frosted window, wool scarf), spring (pale linen, fresh tulips). Keep the product, angle and lighting direction the same."

**Bundle flat lay**

> "Top-down flat lay of these three skincare products on pale terrazzo, evenly spaced with a few rose petals and a small towel, soft diffused light, 1:1."

**Hero for a launch**

> "Studio hero shot of this headphone on a black glossy surface with a mirror reflection, single cool spotlight from above, subtle haze, dramatic and premium. 16:9 with space on the right for text."

## Keep products accurate

* Say what must stay the same: "Keep the label, logo, color and shape exactly as in the photo."
* Upload the real logo if it needs to appear separately from the product.
* Check every result against the real product before using it. AI can change label text, proportions or small details.
* If something drifts, say exactly what to fix: "The cap should be matte black, not glossy. Fix only the cap."

## Make a set, not a single image

Ask for several shots in one message so they share lighting and style:

> "Make a product page set for this bag: white-background front view, three-quarter view, back view, an interior detail shot, and one lifestyle shot on a café chair. Same soft daylight across all. 1:1."

Then resize the ones you need for ads. See Image Generation.

## Fix common problems

| Problem | Try |
| :- | :- |
| Looks fake or "AI" | Add a specific real setting and light source; ask for "natural, candid, photographic" |
| Product looks different | Upload a clearer photo or more angles; say "keep the product exactly as in the photo" |
| Label text is wrong | Ask Glif to fix only the label; check against the original |
| Too busy | Ask for fewer props and more empty space |
| Wrong mood | Change lighting first; it affects mood more than anything else |
| Doesn't match the rest of the campaign | Keep it in the same chat, or apply the same Style |

## Try a ready-made workflow

* [Product Photo Studio](https://glif.app/chat/cards/product-photo-studio--jyVwcuh2): one product photo in, lifestyle scenes, flat lays and studio hero shots out (estimated 2–24 credits).
* [Product Placements](https://glif.app/chat/cards/product-placements--Xo7vf3jG): your product in a scene you describe (estimated 15–60 credits).
* [Multi-Angle product shot](https://glif.app/chat/cards/multi-angle-product-shot--a1b2c3d4-1003-4aaa-b003-ugcstylead003): four camera angles from one photo, joined by smooth video transitions (estimated 80–300 credits).
* [Create Product Lookbooks](https://glif.app/chat/cards/create-product-lookbooks--fbuG3c9T): see How to Create a Consistent Product Lookbook.

## Agent Reference

### Prompt template

```text theme={null}
[Shot type] of [product, from the attached photo] [setting/surface].
[Lighting]. [Camera angle, distance, focus].
[Composition and negative space]. [Mood and palette]. [Aspect ratio].
Keep [label/logo/color/shape] exactly as in the photo.
```

### Request pattern

* Pass product photos as `asset_ids` (or `attachments` for public URLs). Include multiple angles when available.
* Request a full set (shot types × formats) in one `compose_project` call so lighting and style match.
* For transparent cutouts, say "transparent background" explicitly.
* For variations of an approved image, continue the same `project_id` and state what stays fixed.
